Hotels near the Tower of London
The Tower of London, one of the most popular tourist attractions in London, was built by William the Conquerer in the 11th century. The Tower has been used as a palace, a fortress, the treasury and famously as a prison. The Tower of London also houses the Crown Jewels which are the greatest working collection of Crown Jewels in the world and priceless symbols of British monarchy.
Two world famous diamonds – the gigantic Cullinan I and Koh-i-Nor - are part of the collection that has a total of 23,578 gems. In fact the Imperial State Crown alone has almost 3,000 diamonds along with pearls, sapphires, emeralds and rubies. The famous Beefeaters are still tasked with guarding the Crown Jewels. Visitors can take a tour with one of the Yeoman Warders around the Tower of London and explore its 900-year history.
Many people lost their heads in the Tower and some of the more infamous inmates include Anne Boleyn, Edward V, Guy Fawkes and Sir Thomas More. In fact, the Tower was still used as a prison during the two world wars where some prisoners were still executed.
Visitors to the Tower of London must see the Ravens, The White Tower, the 'Yeomen of the Guard', Henry VIII's armour, instruments of torture in the Lower Wakefield Tower and the Traitors Gate.
The Tower is on the North side of the Thames just opposite City Hall with Tower Bridge straddling the Thames between them. The nearest tube station is Tower Hill on the Circle and District underground lines. The Tower Gateway station on the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) is a short walk away.
